Why is there a 20% discount?
In 2017, after a lengthy court procedure, Google received a record fine of €2.4 billion for abusing its dominant position by displaying its comparison shopping services more favourably than its rivals on the results pages.
In reaction to the court ruling, Google took major steps with the launch of the Google CSS program to allow other comparison sites the opportunity to compete fairly.
In order to access the program and unlock the 20% savings, an ecommerce store works with a CSS Partner.
How does the discount work?
Your Google Merchant Center account is connected to our CSS Partner Multi-Client Account. Your ads will then show on Google but with lower bids by up to 20%.
To give you an example, your 0.80 bid gets the value of 1.00 increasing the profitability and revenue of your shopping ad campaigns. So if you’re spending £10,000, with a simple switch you could save £2,000 p/m! CSS Shopping adverts are currently available in 21 countries.
What is a CSS Partner?
A Comparison Shopping Service (CSS) is a comparison website that collects prices from different ecommerce webstores in order to funnel visitors to those stores. You will already be using a CSS when you view the Shopping tab on Google as this is the Google CSS.
Other comparison sites can also purchase ads from Google on behalf of webstores – these are known as CSS Partners. Their ads are displayed in the same way as Google’s shopping ads but instead of a link below the ad displaying ‘By Google‘ it will display ‘By [CSS name]‘.
When a user clicks on the ad they are redirected to the webstore as they would be with any other ad. Should the user click on the ‘By [CSS name]‘ link they are redirected to the CSS comparison page instead of the Google Shopping tab.
